Information from Jennifer Stark [04-10-2012]

Harriet Homewood's son Charles Homewood Hopper (1850 - 1884) was my great grandfather. His family all moved to New Zealand and died there. Information about them is as follows:

Wife: Elizabeth (Bourne) Hopper (1853 - 1936), moved to Gisborne, New Zealand with both daughters in 1905 on the Tongariro. She died in Gisborne 24/11/1936, aged 83, buried in Gisborne cemetery 26/11/1936.

Daughter: Harriet Hannah Hopper (1877 - 1916), moved to Gisborne, New Zealand in 1905 on the Tongariro. She married Charles Herbert Gardham 1911 in Gisborne, they had no children. She died 18/2/1916 and buried in the Taruheru cemetery, Gisborne, 19/2/1916.

Son: Thomas Edward Hopper (1878 - 1955), left England in 1900 on the Ortona for Sydney, Australia, and then onto Gisborne, New Zealand. He did not marry and died in Gisborne 2/12/1955, buried in the Taruheru, Gisborne cemetery 5/12/1955.

Daughter: Emily Grace Hopper, moved to Gisborne, New Zealand in 1905 on the Tongariro. She never married and died 22/9/1911 in Gisborne. Buried in the Makaraka cemetery, Gisborne.

Son: Charles Homewood Hopper (1881 - 1970), moved to Australia (we believe) C1891 with his father's cousin William Love (son of William Love and Emmeline Homewood, S98 on your tree), and then onto Gisborne by at least the mid 1890s. They both boarded the Rimutaka in 1896 going to Wellington, New Zealand. Charles Homewood Hopper changed his name to Charles Harper (no middle name) by 1900 and had left Gisborne for Hawke's Bay. He married Rose Hodgson (1894 - 1984) in Loburn, New Zealand in 1919 and they lived in Hastings, New Zealand for almost all of their married life. Charles died 4/4/1970 and is buried in the Hastings cemetery. Charles and Rose had 4 children: Gladys Harper (1920 - 1996), Hazel Harper (1921 - still alive), Ray Harper (1924 - 1982), Eric Harper (1931 - still alive).

Son: William Hopper (1883 - 1936), left England in 1900 on the Ortona for Sydney, Australia, and then onto Gisborne, New Zealand. He did not marry and died in Gisborne 12/11/1936, buried in the Taruheru, Gisborne cemetery 14/11/1936.

buried in the Taruheru, Gisborne cemetery.

William Love (1855 - 1924) is the son of Emmaline/Emmeline Homewood (S98 on your tree) and William Love. William (1855 - 1924) possibly married Martha someone between 1881 and 1891. He (and Martha perhaps) apparently took Charles Homewood Hopper to Australia in about 1891, where Charles finished his schooling. In 1896, William Love left Plymouth on the Rimutaka with Charles Hopper for Wellington New Zealand. William is a farmer in the Gisborne district for the rest of his life, where he dies in 1924. He is buried in the Gisborne cemetery.

Charles Homewood Hopper (1881 - 1970) was my grandfather. I realise that the Love family are not your direct line and so you may not have looked at this part of the family, but wonder if you have any contacts from the Love family who might be able to give me information? We only found out that my grandfather, who we knew as Charles Harper was in fact Charles H Hopper in about 2003, and know virtually nothing about who William Love (1855 - 1924) married, what happened to his wife, where they went to in Australia before going to NZ, why they went etc.
